Japan itineraries can be surprisingly difficult to predict.
Some travelers arrive at Narita Airport and head straight into Tokyo.
Others go directly to Hakone, Mt. Fuji or a ski resort.
And occasionally, we receive a request that reminds us just how differently international travelers explore Japan:
“Can you pick us up at Narita Airport and take us directly to Matsumoto?”
Yes — Matsumoto is quite a distance from Tokyo.
But for travelers who want to explore the Japanese Alps, it can make perfect sense.
We recently had guests who traveled directly from Narita Airport to Matsumoto before returning to Tokyo later in their journey.
It was another reminder that not every Japan trip has to follow the familiar Airport → Tokyo → Sightseeing pattern.

Why Travel from Tokyo to Matsumoto?
Matsumoto is located in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the mountainous landscapes of central Japan.
For many international visitors, the city is best known for Matsumoto Castle, but its location also makes it a useful gateway for exploring a much wider part of the Japanese Alps.
Some travelers visit Matsumoto from Tokyo and return.
Others stay for one or two nights before continuing deeper into the mountains.
And some use Matsumoto as one part of a longer journey connecting places such as Hakuba, Kanazawa or Toyama.
That is what makes this route interesting.
Matsumoto does not necessarily have to be the end of the journey.
It can be the beginning of another part of Japan.

Tokyo to Matsumoto by Private Vehicle
A common route is:
Tokyo Hotel → Matsumoto
For travelers already staying in Tokyo, a private vehicle offers a straightforward door-to-door option.
Your driver picks you up from your hotel, your luggage is loaded into the vehicle, and you travel directly to your accommodation or planned destination in Matsumoto.
There is no need to move large suitcases through stations or arrange another local transfer after arriving.
This can be particularly useful for families, small groups, travelers with several suitcases or anyone continuing beyond Matsumoto afterward.

Haneda Airport to Matsumoto
Tokyo does not have to be your first stop after landing at Haneda Airport.
Some travelers prefer to begin their trip outside the city and return to Tokyo later.
In that case, an itinerary can start simply:
Haneda Airport → Matsumoto
After immigration and baggage collection, you meet your driver, load your luggage and begin the journey toward Nagano Prefecture.
For an airport pickup, a name-board meeting can be arranged so that finding your driver after a long international flight is as straightforward as possible.
Instead of unpacking in Tokyo for one night and packing again the next morning, you can begin moving toward the Japanese Alps from the day you arrive.

Narita Airport to Matsumoto
Narita Airport to Matsumoto is a longer journey, but it is also a route that travelers actually request.
One reason may simply be itinerary efficiency.
If Matsumoto is already one of the first destinations on your Japan trip, traveling into Tokyo only to leave the city again may not fit the journey you have planned.
With a private vehicle, the route becomes:
Narita Airport → Private Vehicle → Matsumoto
Your suitcases remain in the vehicle, and the journey can be managed around your group rather than around train connections.
Of course, because this is a long-distance transfer, your flight arrival time and overall schedule should be considered carefully before booking.

A Long Drive Does Not Have to Mean Driving Nonstop
This is an important point for long-distance private transfers.
After spending many hours on an international flight, most travelers do not want to sit in another vehicle for hours without stopping.
For longer journeys, rest stops can be arranged along the way depending on the route and traffic conditions.
As a general travel rhythm, we can take a break approximately every 100 km or around two hours when appropriate.
At a Japanese highway service area, you can use the restroom, stretch your legs, buy coffee or snacks and, when time allows, have a simple meal.
Then everyone gets back into the vehicle and continues toward Matsumoto.
The transfer itself should be part of a comfortable journey — not something that has to be endured.

Traveling with Children or Large Luggage?
Longer Japan itineraries often mean more luggage.
A couple traveling for two weeks may already have several large suitcases.
Families may also have carry-ons, children’s bags and a stroller.
When requesting a private transfer, it is therefore important to tell us not only the number of passengers but also the amount of luggage.
That helps determine which vehicle is appropriate.
For families traveling with a young child, one child seat can also be prepared free of charge when requested in advance.
The goal is simple: choose the vehicle around the actual journey rather than trying to make the journey fit the vehicle.

Matsumoto Can Be a Gateway to the Japanese Alps
For some travelers, Matsumoto is the destination.
For others, it is a gateway.
After spending a night or two in Matsumoto, the journey may continue toward another part of central Japan.
For example:
Tokyo → Matsumoto → Hakuba
Tokyo → Matsumoto → Kanazawa
Tokyo → Matsumoto → Toyama
Or the itinerary may simply be:
Tokyo → Matsumoto → Tokyo
There are many possible combinations.
This is also why international travel itineraries are so interesting to us. Travelers sometimes connect destinations in ways we would never think of when looking only at standard sightseeing routes.

Matsumoto and Hakuba in One Journey
Matsumoto and Hakuba can also appear in the same itinerary, particularly for travelers exploring Nagano or traveling during the winter season.
A journey might look like:
Tokyo / Airport → Matsumoto → Hakuba → Tokyo
or perhaps:
Matsumoto → Hakuba → Another Destination
For this type of multi-destination journey, traveling with the same luggage becomes an important consideration.
Instead of treating every section as a separate transportation problem, the route can be planned as one continuous journey.

What About Winter Travel?
Matsumoto itself and the surrounding mountain regions can experience very different winter conditions from central Tokyo.
For winter long-distance travel, vehicle preparation matters.
KT Hire prepares appropriate vehicles with winter tires for routes where winter conditions require them, and our vehicles undergo regular inspections.
Our drivers are professionally trained and experienced with long-distance driving.
Weather and road conditions can still affect any winter journey, so schedules should always leave appropriate flexibility.
The objective is not simply to arrive quickly.
It is to arrive safely and comfortably.

You Do Not Have to Return to Tokyo Immediately
This is perhaps the most useful way to think about Matsumoto.
If you have already traveled several hours from Tokyo or an airport, you do not necessarily have to make the same journey back the following morning.
Matsumoto can become part of a wider route through central Japan.
Depending on your itinerary, you might continue toward Hakuba, Toyama, Kanazawa or another destination before eventually returning to Tokyo or traveling elsewhere.
For travelers who prefer less conventional itineraries, private transportation can make these connections easier to organize.
What Should You Send Us for a Matsumoto Transfer?
If you are considering a private vehicle between Tokyo and Matsumoto, the most useful information is:
Travel date
Pickup location — Tokyo hotel, Haneda Airport or Narita Airport
Flight number and arrival time, if applicable
Number of passengers
Number and approximate size of suitcases
Child seat requirement
Matsumoto hotel or destination
Where you plan to travel after Matsumoto
If you are planning several destinations, send the entire itinerary rather than only one transfer.
Sometimes seeing the complete journey makes it easier to find a more practical route.

Your Japan Journey Does Not Have to Follow the Usual Route
Tokyo is one of the world’s great cities, but Japan does not begin and end there.
Some travelers land at Haneda and head toward the mountains.
Some leave Narita and travel directly to Matsumoto.
Others start from a Tokyo hotel, spend a few days exploring the Japanese Alps and continue toward Hakuba, Toyama or Kanazawa.
There is no single correct way to travel through Japan.
If Matsumoto is where you want to go next, the question is simply how to make that journey work comfortably with your schedule, passengers and luggage.
For some travelers, rail will make the most sense.
For others — particularly families, groups, travelers with substantial luggage or those planning a multi-destination journey — a private vehicle may fit the itinerary better.
And sometimes an unexpected route becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
