A Narita Airport to Kusatsu Onsen private transfer takes your group and luggage from the airport to your booked ryokan without changing vehicles. Train-and-bus travel is also possible, but requires connections and a final transfer to some accommodations. Your flight, luggage and arrival plans help determine which option fits.
Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma, is a mountain hot spring town where an overnight stay lets you enjoy more than a quick bath.

Why Our Operator Recommends Kusatsu
KT Hire’s operator shares a personal recommendation: “I take hot spring trips with my family around two or three times a year. Among the destinations around Tokyo, Kusatsu is my personal favorite. I love the atmosphere of the whole town and feel at ease while staying there.”
For visitors, it combines bathing culture with time to explore.
Imagine a Day in Kusatsu Onsen
Begin around Yubatake, the hot water field at the center of town. Water passes through wooden channels while steam rises above the surrounding streets.

After dark, lighting transforms the same setting. A short evening walk can become a highlight without adding another excursion to your schedule.

At Netsunoyu, yumomi performances introduce the traditional practice of stirring hot spring water with wooden boards, accompanied by song. Nearby Sainokawara Park provides another walk among natural hot spring features. The park and the separately charged Sainokawara Open-Air Bath are different experiences.

Back at your ryokan, leave time for bathing and dinner. Japanese-style meals, outdoor baths and in-room baths depend on the property and booking plan.
Visit at the Beginning or End of Your Trip
Going straight from the airport can start your holiday with a mountain stay. However, a long flight is followed by a substantial road journey. Consider arrival procedures, rest breaks and the accommodation’s dinner deadline before choosing this arrangement.
Alternatively, finish Tokyo sightseeing or a longer Japan itinerary with one, two or several nights in Kusatsu. Spend the time walking, eating and resting rather than filling every hour.
A same-day airport return needs a separate assessment. For early flights, staying in Tokyo or near the airport the previous night may be more practical.
Narita Airport to Kusatsu Onsen: Your Transport Choices
Train and Local Bus
One established route starts at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station:
Skyliner to Keisei-Ueno → walk to JR Ueno Station → Kusatsu-Shima limited express to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi → JR Bus Kanto to Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal.
This involves two vehicle changes and a walk between the Ueno stations. Standard adult one-way costs are:
Allow approximately 4–5 hours from airport train departure with workable connections. Immigration, baggage collection, initial waiting and the final hotel journey are additional. Kusatsu-Shima departures are limited, so this route will not suit every flight.
Reserve train seats; the local bus is first-come, first-served. From the bus terminal, continue on foot, by taxi or by an accommodation shuttle if your property provides one. Confirm its booking conditions.
Private Car to Your Accommodation
A Narita to Kusatsu private transfer keeps your group and suitcases together until the ryokan’s permitted drop-off point. “Direct” means no vehicle change; an agreed rest stop is possible.
Using Terminal 1 and Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal as route benchmarks, one road calculation is approximately 276 km and four hours of driving.
Allow separately for airport procedures, meeting the driver and rest stops. Traffic, snow and weather can extend the journey. Share your ryokan’s check-in and dinner deadlines; landing time alone cannot confirm arrival before dinner.
Send your flight and accommodation details if you would like us to review a suitable transfer plan.

Airport Meetings, Luggage and Rest Breaks
Meeting instructions depend on your terminal. Name-board arrangements and any charges are confirmed with the quotation; a separately requested meeting assistant costs ¥3,000. At Narita Terminal 3, an arrivals-hall name-board meeting is unavailable; follow the separate instructions for an approximately three-minute walk to pickup.
KT Hire recommends an Alphard or HiAce after checking passengers, suitcases and other large belongings. Seat count alone does not confirm luggage capacity. Request child seats in advance with children’s ages and requirements.
A suitable highway stop can provide toilets, coffee or a meal. Purchases are separate. Winter vehicle and tire suitability are checked against the destination and road conditions.

Haneda, Tokyo Hotels and Your Return Flight
KT Hire receives frequent inquiries for Haneda Airport to Kusatsu Onsen, Narita departures and Tokyo hotel pickups. We also receive inquiries and operate transfers from Kusatsu accommodation to Haneda or Narita.
Using the same bus-terminal benchmark, road calculations are approximately 223 km and 3 hours 10 minutes from Haneda Terminal 3, or 208 km and 2 hours 55 minutes from Tokyo Station. These exclude congestion and breaks.
Return timing is assessed independently using your hotel, flight and road conditions.
Can You Combine Kusatsu and Karuizawa?
Yes. Karuizawa adds walking, cafés, dining and shopping. From Karuizawa Station to Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, a road route via Routes 18, 146 and 292 is approximately 45 km. For planning, allow around 1–1½ hours or longer in winter, plus sightseeing time.
Consider Tokyo → Karuizawa visit → Kusatsu overnight, or Kusatsu checkout → Karuizawa visit → Tokyo. Airport-arrival sightseeing is sensible only when the flight and hotel schedule leave sufficient time.
Winter closures affect some mountain roads; the northern Shiga-Kusatsu highland route is not the southern Karuizawa approach. Date-specific checks remain necessary. Adding sightseeing changes vehicle time and the quotation.
