Thinking about adding a coastal ryokan stay to your Tokyo trip? Tokyo to Atami is an easy rail journey, while Ito offers another base farther down the Izu Peninsula’s eastern coast. Both combine seaside scenery with hot spring accommodation, but your hotel’s location, luggage and sightseeing plans will shape the best transport choice.
A morning departure can leave time for a waterfront walk before check-in. However, sea views, bathing facilities and the atmosphere vary between properties and seasons.
Which Coastal Town Suits Your Stay?
Atami: A Seaside City with Convenient Rail Access
Atami, in Shizuoka Prefecture, combines a waterfront skyline, hot springs and shopping streets near its station. Browse for snacks, walk beside the sea or arrive early enough to enjoy your ryokan. The city has slopes, so check the final journey rather than assuming every hotel is an easy walk.

Ito: Choose Between the Town and Izu-Kogen
Ito lies south of Atami. Central Ito offers accommodation around the station and waterfront; Izu-Kogen is a separate area farther south within Ito City. Its accommodation and nearby attractions are more spread out. Check the property’s address before choosing Ito Station as your destination.

Choose Sights Around Your Accommodation
Jogasaki Coast: Cliffs and a Suspension Bridge
Jogasaki Coast, or 城ヶ崎海岸, features lava-shaped cliffs and ocean views. Kadowaki Suspension Bridge is a highlight. The walk from Jogasaki-Kaigan Station takes roughly 35 minutes, while the nearby Kadowaki parking area provides a shorter approach. Longer trails include steps and uneven ground, so choose a suitable section.

Mount Omuro: A Lift Ride Above the Coast
Mount Omuro’s rounded volcanic cone offers a different perspective on Izu. A chairlift carries visitors to the summit, where a path follows the crater rim. Clear conditions bring wider views, but Mount Fuji is not always visible. Wind and weather can suspend lift operations.

Atami Castle and Early Cherry Blossoms
Atami Castle offers elevated coastal views and visitor exhibits. Built in 1959 as a tourist attraction, it is not a surviving feudal castle.
For winter and early-spring planning, Atami-zakura around the Itogawa River typically reaches its viewing period in late January and early February. Kawazu-zakura is associated with Kawazu, a separate town farther south, generally from early February into early March. Bloom timing changes with the weather.

Seafood and a Ryokan Evening
Kinmedai, or splendid alfonsino, is a regional seafood highlight, often served simmered in a sweet-savory soy-based sauce. Sashimi and other seafood dishes can also feature in coastal dining.
Menus vary by season, property and booking plan; kinmedai is not automatically included. Tell your accommodation about allergies and dietary restrictions before booking.

Choose the Room and Plan, Not Just the Town
For an Atami example, Furuya Ryokan (古屋旅館) is a traditional central-town inn with hot spring bathing and kaiseki dining. Atami Station is approximately five minutes away by taxi or 15 minutes on foot. It is not a sea-view property.
In central Ito, KAI Anjin (界 アンジン) offers ocean-facing accommodation, rooftop hot spring bathing and maritime-inspired design. It is approximately five minutes by taxi or 15 minutes on foot from Ito Station, rather than in Izu-Kogen.
These are accommodation examples, not KT Hire partner packages. Confirm meals, room type, bath facilities and any private-bath arrangements for your chosen plan.
Tokyo to Atami and Ito by Train
The following are adult one-way standard paper-ticket fares from Tokyo Station. Times exclude initial waiting and the final hotel transfer.
Atami by ordinary train: take a direct Atami-bound JR Tokaido Line service. Allow approximately 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours. The ordinary-car fare is ¥2,090, with no express supplement.
Atami by Shinkansen: take Kodama or a Hikari service that stops at Atami. Allow around 40–50 minutes. The ordinary unreserved-seat total is ¥3,740: ¥1,980 basic fare plus ¥1,760 Shinkansen supplement. Reserved seats cost more; unreserved tickets do not guarantee a seat.
Ito via Atami: take the Tokaido Line to Atami, then change once to the JR Ito Line. The through ordinary-car fare is ¥2,420, with no express supplement. Allow roughly 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes, including a connection; the Atami–Ito train portion takes around 25 minutes.
For Izu-Kogen accommodation, continue beyond Ito using the appropriate additional transport and fare. Confirm hotel shuttles directly, including reservation requirements.
Check luggage rules before choosing a train. On the Tokaido Shinkansen, bags over 160 cm in combined dimensions require the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation. Fares and timetables can change.
When Does a Private Car Help?
A private transfer connects your Tokyo hotel with your booked accommodation. It may suit families, older parents, several suitcases or a property away from the station. Trains offer predictable running times and often lower costs, particularly for smaller parties.
Using Tokyo Station as the starting benchmark, road-routing estimates are approximately 105 km and 1 hour 50 minutes to Furuya Ryokan, or 125–130 km and 2 hours 20 minutes to KAI Anjin. These are driving references without live congestion or breaks. Weekends, weather, traffic and rest stops can extend them.
Rail fares are per person; KT Hire quotations are per vehicle. Sightseeing stops or onward hotel transfers change the required vehicle time and may change the quotation.
Keep a One-Night Trip Simple
Atami stay: leave Tokyo, enjoy a coastal walk or one chosen attraction, then check in for bathing and dinner.
Ito or Izu-Kogen stay: choose Jogasaki Coast or Mount Omuro before heading to your accommodation. Finish sightseeing early enough for dinner. Combining both coastal areas requires additional travel time and attention to your hotel’s location.
Request Your Coastal Ryokan Transfer
KT Hire recommends an Alphard or HiAce after checking passengers and all luggage. Child seats and suitable rest stops can be discussed in advance.
Send your travel date, departure hotel, destination name and address, adult and child numbers, suitcase quantities and sizes, children’s ages and seat needs, preferred departure time, and any sightseeing stop or next destination through WhatsApp on KT Hire’s official website. We will review your itinerary and provide a quotation.
